SEDATIVES

Sedatives are the drugs that are used to induce a person to calm or to sleep. This allows a person who has been treated with sedatives to be in a relaxed state of mind. Sometimes, these drugs may also act as hypnotics like drugs. Genarlly, these form of drugs can be identified as tranquilizers, depressants, and sleeping pills. Sleeping pills form an important part of sedatives. These pills are administered to people who are generally very restless and who are in a distressed state. These drugs have to be prescribed in a very small amount, otherwise excess dosage of these drugs can lead to a person to be in an unconscious state or may even prove fatal in certain cases

Barbiturates come under sedatives. Benzodiazepines are other classifications of sedatives. These benzodiazepines are mild tranquilizers. They are administered to patients to remove anxiety and tension. Commonly these sedatives can also be used as a local anesthesia to children and young adults. In lots of cases, the patient becomes untractable during surgeries or operations. These sedatives help a person to calm . Generally these do not have side effects. Care should be taken such that these sedatives are not given to alcohol dependent patients as they could trigger inverse effects and induce mental injury.
